🚨 Crime & Public Safety

  • Impaired Driver Taken Off Hwy 115: A 30-year-old Pontypool resident was arrested Friday night after OPP received emergency calls about a vehicle driving with no headlights and swerving across lanes. The driver failed a roadside breath test and faces charges of Impaired Operation, driving without rear lights, and having cannabis readily available. Their license was suspended for 90 days and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

  • Weapon Arrests at Local Business: Peterborough Police arrested a 15-year-old local boy at a city business, charging him with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and carrying a concealed weapon. A 24-year-old Ottawa woman was also arrested in a related case and charged with uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm.

  • Tense Weekend Takedown Recovers Replica Firearms: General patrols and tactical units flooded a commercial plaza near Chemong Road and Bellevue Street early Saturday after witnesses spotted two teens openly carrying firearms. Three arrests were made, and three replica BB handguns were recovered. A 17-year-old local girl faces multiple heavy charges, including Assault with a Weapon and Pointing a Firearm (linking back to an earlier dispute near Parkhill and Monaghan Roads), plus two counts of Assaulting a Peace Officer for kicking and scratching jail staff. A 15-year-old boy and a 24-year-old Ottawa woman also face charges.

  • Violent Crime Up, Break-Ins Down in Q1: First-quarter stats for 2026 show a 9% increase in violent crime compared to last year (rising from 316 to 343 incidents). Sexual offences spiked 26% and robberies rose 29%, though physical assaults dropped by 26%. On the property side, break-and-enters dropped 30%, but thefts from vehicles nearly doubled—skyrocketing 89% from 55 to 104 incidents.

  • New Hope in Missing Person Case: The OPP recently searched a rural property on County Road 503 formerly owned by the family of Michael Walker (57), who vanished nearly three years ago in the Kinmount/Minden area. While investigators fear foul play, the search has given his mother, Barb Walker, renewed hope. A $10,000 reward via Please Bring Me Home remains active.

πŸš† Transit & Community Development

  • High-Speed Rail Still Tracks Through Peterborough: Martin Imbleau, CEO of Alto (the upcoming federal high-speed passenger rail service), confirmed a stop in Peterborough remains a locked-in priority. Despite federal orders to evaluate a Kingston route, Imbleau assured local officials that Peterborough is guaranteed a spot on the 300 km/h, $90-billion electric train line. A final route decision is expected this fall.
