Community Update: City of Peterborough & IBEW Local 636 Labour Negotiations 🚨🤝

Here is what you need to know about the ongoing collective bargaining between the City of Peterborough and IBEW Local 636 (representing ~78 City employees in Water Services and Riverview Park and Zoo):

📊 Current Status

  • Legal Position: IBEW Local 636 has received a "no-board" report, putting the union in a legal strike position and the City in a legal lockout position.

  • No Work Stoppage Yet: There is no strike or lockout currently happening, and negotiations remain confidential as both sides work toward an agreement.

  • Service Impact: Services are running normally today! Contingency plans are set up if a labour disruption occurs.

💧 Water Services: Safe & Continuous

In the event of a strike or lockout:

  • Water Quality is Guaranteed: Drinking water treatment, testing, monitoring, and safety regulations will continue uninterrupted in cooperation with the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

🐒 Riverview Park & Zoo: Temporary Closure Plan

If a disruption takes place:

  • Zoo & Train Closed: The zoo grounds and the miniature train ride will close to the public.

  • Animal Care First: Closure ensures remaining staff can focus 100% of their time and resources on animal health and care.

🏛️ Other City Services & City Hall

  • City Hall Open: Building Services, the Clerk’s Office, and Provincial Offences will run normally.

  • Potential Delays: Customer service for Water Services via Service Peterborough may experience delays. Many services remain available online at peterborough.ca.
